Born in 1957, Shirin Neshat ( شیرین نشاط ) is an Iranian film director, producer, actress, writer, photographer and video artist who lives in New York City. She was brought up in the religious town of Qazvin in north-western Iran before leaving Iran in the late 1970s to study art in Los Angeles and San Francisco where she completed her BA, MA and MFA. Influenced by the work of Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami, she has directed several video/audio installations that have been showcased

Though Neshat is most prominently known for her short films, she made her feature film directorial debut in 2009 with Women Without Men and won the Silver Lion and Unicef Award for Best Director at the 66th Venice Film Festival. In 2013, she was a member of the jury at the 63rd Berlin International Film Festival.
