Maleknasr graduated in filmmaking from the University of Southern California. She did her postgraduate degree in Drama at Towson State University in Maryland. She made her first short film, "Jazz Ballet", in the U.S, and she returned to Tehran to perform in Dariush Mehrjui's "Sara" (1993). For this role, she won a Best Supporting Actress Award from the Fajr International Film Festival. Maleknasr directed her debut feature film, "The Common Plight", in 1995. She later made a film about the earthq ...uake in Bam.
