Born in Tehran to Armenian parents in 1954, Robert Safarian ( روبرت صافاریان ) studied Cinema in the School of Iranian Television (IRIB college). Later he also studied Persian literature and got a degree. He has translated many articles and books on cinema and film theory such as Semiotics of Cinema (Christien Metz) and and Film History: An Introduction (David Bordwell and Kristin Thompson). He has contributed to all major Iranian film magazines and newspapers as a film critic. As d ...ocumentary filmmaker, he has directed films such as Inversion (Varoonegi / 2006) on air pollution of Tehran, Tehran in Photographs (Tehran dar Aks / 2008) , Conversation with Revolution (Goftegoo ba Enghelab / 2011), which is a new look at the Iranian revolution of 1989 and the concept of revolution in general and Between two migrations (Dar faseleyeh do Kooch / 2013 ). Robert Safarian's last film is a portrait of Armenian-Iranian poet Azad Matian, who could have migrated to Armenia when he was a child, if the repatriation program of Armenians of Iran to the Soviet Armenia had not been cancelled and is now emigrating to US. His life and work exemplifi a state of living of Armenian-Iranian always at the verge of emigration.
