Born in 1951 in Mashad, Mehdi Sabbaghzadeh started experimental flimmaking in 1971. He made a number of 8mm pictures at the Free Cinema Group before directing his first feature in 1980, "The Liegemen". He has directed a number of popular features, his most recent being "Way of Heaven" (2012) which competed in the 30th Fajr International Film Festival and received the Special Jury Award.

Senator is about that A huge drug gang smuggles big loads of heroin from the southern Iranian borders to the country and distribute them all over the country relying on the influence and power of a senator. An innocent young man named Ali Haghighat, who unwarily drives one of the trucks loaded with drugs, is confiscated by sergeant Haghgou in one of the outpost borders. The officials get angry with sergeant Haghgou because he refuses to cooperate with them. While he believes in Ali's innocense, he provides the means for his escape and then decides to reveal the names of the people involved in the gang and gradually finds out about the bitter truth. Ali loses his life in this way. In a drug prevention seminar, the senator is giving a lecture about the harms and disadvantages of drugs. Sergeant Haghgou, who is sitting in the audience, stands up and ends the senator’s life with a bullet.
